Painting Tits, 2014 by Christina West

Tits, 2014

pigmented Hydrocal and spray paint
22" tall x 12" x 12"
This bust takes on the format of a traditional portrait bust with its beautiful, idealized form. It strays from tradition, however, by concealing the sitter’s identity in a tangle of clothing, as well as by inserting a degree of irreverence with the graffiti-like spray paint on the surface. The spray paint, though not immediately legible, spells out “Tits”, which is a crude way of pointing to the sexuality and objectification of the body presented. This surface treatment adds a conceptual layer that complicates that way we see the body.
